Menjangan Island Dive Sites
Menjangan Island is surrounded by dive sites suitable for all divers and snorkelers. The best dive sites at Menjangan Island are arguably those with plunging walls and mild to moderate currents, such as Eel Garden and Bat Cave. The island also boasts sloping reefs, sandy bottoms, and fascinating topography.
Suitable for: Snorkelers and all levels of divers
Water temperature: 26-30 °C (79-86°F).
Conditions: Generally calm with mild to moderate current. Seasonal winds may prevent diving the south side.
Visibility: 15- 30+ meters (50-100 feet).
Eel Garden
Dive along a dramatic wall covered in healthy corals, leading to a sandy bottom where thousands of garden eels dance when the current is right. Look into the blue for reef sharks and giant trevally. Focus on the wall for nudibranchs, frogfish, orangutan crabs, and huge gorgonian sea fans.
Bat Cave
Drift dive along a striking wall or snorkel the shallow reef shelf, which is covered in hard and soft corals and teeming with fish. Look for macro life on the reef. Advanced divers can descend to 20-30 meters to look for reef sharks that frequent the deeper, stronger currents.
POS 1
Visit the island to look for resident menjangan (deer), sunbathe, eat a packed lunch, or use the toilet facilities. Underwater, expect a shallow sandy bottom – often used for training dives – extending to a sloping reef home to a variety of marine life.
POS 2
Head to the small beach to take a break topside, where you may spot a menjangan looking for food or water. Dive this beautiful coral wall for macro life, including electric clams, nudibranchs, pygmy seahorses, signal blennies, dart fish, and more.
Underwater Cave
Search the plunging coral wall for a hidden crevice that opens to a large sandy-bottomed “cave”. Enter to witness stunning sunlight pierce the breaks in the reef shelf and search the interior walls for electric clams.
Mangrove
Expect fascinating topography along a wall featuring crevices, windows, and overhangs. Look for frogfish and other critters on unique hard coral formations. Underwater photographers get very unique shots at this site.
Anchor Wreck
Descend at the buoy line to find a massive anchor lying on the reef at around 7 meters. A thick chain extends down the reef, but all that remains of the actual shipwreck are a few wooden beams on the ocean floor beyond recreational depths.
Dream Wall
Take in beautiful corals as you descend along this vertical wall. Search the sandy crevices for signal blennies and dart fish. Spot camouflaged scorpion fish and crocodile fish on the reef. Look to the blue for schooling fusiliers.
Sandy Slope
Complete your training dives or PADI Discover Scuba Diving at this calm site with a shallow white sand bottom. Explore the gently sloping reef to find anemone fish, pufferfish, and reef life. Perfect for beginners!
Coral Garden
Explore a shallow sloping reef that extends well beyond 20 meters. This is the perfect site for the third dive of the day. Conditions are calm, there’s a lot of marine life, and the best corals are in shallower waters.
Peti
Expect the unexpected at this dive site, where reef sharks and titan triggerfish sometimes patrol the reef. Search the sandy areas for macro life and look in the blue for schools of fish and hunters.
Pemuteran Dive Sites
Pemuteran is a village east of Sumberkima. Its protected bay and outlying coastal areas are home to a variety of dive sites, from muck to reef. Macro and wide-angle underwater photographers will find exciting subjects. The gentle sandy shoreline is perfect for training dives. Deeper reefs with current exposure are ideal for advanced divers.
Suitable for: Snorkelers and all levels of divers (depending on the site and conditions).
Water temperature: 26-30 °C (79-86°F).
Conditions: Generally calm with mild to moderate current.
Visibility: 5-20 meters (16-65 feet).
Napoleon Reef
Expect a healthy reef, expansive fields of xenias, coral drop-offs, and sandy patches. Spot schooling fish, nudibranchs, turtles, and even reef sharks.
Close Encounters
We never know what we’ll encounter at this dive site. Look for anything from small nudibranchs and slugs to large schools of fish in the blue water.
Temple Reef/Temple Wall
Discover an underwater temple deposited on the reef – a unique photo opportunity. The statues are covered in coral, attracting a variety of marine life.
Deep Reef
This underwater pinnacle is an excellent spot for advanced divers or continuing education courses. Look for schooling jacks and fusiliers off the steep sloping reef.
Bio Wreck
Explore unique structures sunk to the ocean floor to create an artificial reef. Look for a variety of coral species and robust marine life drawn to the reefs.
Biorock
Biorock is a coral conservation and restoration project. It consists of many large electrified structures adorned with coral. The project’s success is evident, with older structures boasting full reefs.
Northwest Bali Muck Dives
For a taste of true “muck” diving, macro enthusiasts and underwater photographers won’t want to miss two iconic dive sites in Northwest Bali: Puri Jati and Secret Bay. Both sites have shallow, mucky (sand/silt/mud) bottoms and require strong buoyancy control to dive enjoyably and safely.
Suitable for: Underwater macro photographers and divers with strong buoyancy control.
Water temperature: Puri Jati is 26-28 °C (79-82°F), while Secret Bay is much colder at 23-26 °C (73-79°F).
Conditions: Calm, sheltered, shallow shore-entry sites.
Visibility: 3- 10+ meters (10-32+ feet).
Puri Jati
Enter from the shore to explore a shallow sandy/silty bottom and look for bucket list critters such as Shaun the Sheep nudibranchs, mimic octopuses, sea moths, and more. Depths typically do not exceed 10 meters, and visibility varies. Please note: during periods of heavy rainfall, this site is not diveable due to poor visibility.
Secret Bay
Pack a warmer wetsuit to shore dive Secret Bay, where the water temperature hovers in the low 20s (Celsius). Search the rubbish and mucky bottom for nudibranchs, frogfish, pipefish, sea snakes, and more. Located near the Gilimanuk harbor where ferries cross between Bali and Java, this site is best for photographers.
