Snorkel Sites

Explore Bali’s top snorkel sites at Menjangan Island. Whether you are trying snorkeling for the first time, are an experienced snorkeler, or are even a diver, you’ll be delighted with the healthy reefs at Menjangan Island.

If you are staying in Pemuteran, you can also explore Biorock unguided. Just take your equipment and enter the water from the marked area on the beach. Always be aware of boat traffic and move out of the way of oncoming boats.

Menjangan Island Snorkel Sites

Menjangan Island is surrounded by shallow reef shelves that are perfect for snorkeling. The best snorkel sites are chosen based on the water conditions, so your guide will select the sites when you get to the island. 

Suitable for: All ages and abilities.

Water temperature: 26-30 °C (79-86°F).

Conditions: Generally calm with little current. Winds can create choppy conditions, but one side of the island is always calm.

Visibility: 15- 30+ meters (50-100 feet).

Eel Garden

This reef shelf off the island’s Northwest corner displays vibrant corals and massive schools of fish starting at 1-2 meters. The shelf drops off with a wall plunging vertically to a sandy bottom at 40+ meters. Eel Garden can experience strong surface currents and is not always suitable for snorkeling.

Bat Cave

Another shallow reef shelf and wall, Bat Cave offers some great snorkeling opportunities when the conditions are mild. You’ll see loads of schooling redtoothed triggerfish, a huge variety of hard and soft corals, and you can even look for juvenile reef sharks sleeping under table corals.

POS 1

You can use this jetty to visit the island to look for resident menjangan (deer), take some photos, eat your lunch, or use the toilet facilities. Snorkeling, expect a sloping reef home to a variety of marine life and schooling fish.

POS 2

Visit the small beach to take a break, where you may spot a menjangan interested in your lunch or water bottle. Snorkel the shallow reef shelf to find anemone fish, red-tooth trigger fish, trevally, sweetlips, angel fish, and more.

Underwater Cave

Colorful hard and soft corals adorn the reef shelf, which has some openings to see into the “cave” below. Look for anemone fish, hard and soft corals, and a wide variety of tropical reef fish.

Mangrove

Expect a reef shelf with hard and soft corals, giant clams, banner fish, anemone fish (aka, “Nemo”), surgeon fish, and a variety of other tropical reef fish. 

Anchor Wreck

With decent visibility, you can see a massive anchor lying on the reef at around 7 meters. A thick chain extends down the reef, but all that remains of the ship are a few wooden beams deep on the ocean floor. Various fish patrol this sloping reef, with plenty of life to see from the surface.

Dream Wall

A gently sloping reef shelf drops to a vertical wall covered in beautiful corals. Expect lots of reef fish and look for schooling fusiliers and the hunting giant trevally in the blue water.

Sandy Slope

Perfect for first-timers or anyone feeling nervous about the ocean, this site has a white sandy bottom you can see through crystal clear water from the boat. There are sloping reefs to the east and west, perfect for watching reef fish.

Coral Garden

Explore a shallow sloping reef with tons of healthy soft and hard corals. Conditions are usually calm at this huge reef, making it a favorite among snorkelers at Menjangan Island. You might combine Peti and Coral Garden if the currents are right.

Peti

Often snorkeled with Coral Garden, Peti is a sloping reef with a gentle drop-off. Vibrant hard and soft corals and loads of resident fish inhabit the shallow reef. In the blue water you may be able to spot some larger fish or even a reef shark.
